Informal Education

  • The validation of Informal Education activities are governed by regulations set by the Directorate for Standards and Quality in Education and the Malta Qualifications Council. Details of these regulations can be found in the booklet Secondary School Certificate and Profile - Guidelines determining the verification of informal learning in secondary education (2010)

  • Informal Education includes all activities in which the student takes part and which take place after school hours. These can be carried out on school premises or any other approved location.

  • For Informal Education activities to be given credit in the Secondary School Certificate and Profile transcript, the organisation offering such activities must be registered with MQC. This can be done by accessing the appropriate form from the Malta Qualifications Council website on www.mqc.gov.mt

  • Activities that will be verified as Informal Education should not be part of the student's curriculum. This means that if a student studies a subject at school and then goes for (extra) lessons for the same subject after school hours, these (extra) lessons cannot be considered as an Informal Education activity. No credit will be given to these activities.

  • Although Informal Education takes place outside school hours, it is not independent from school's ethics, rules and regulations. For this reason, if activities performed during Informal Education are deemed to be in conflict with the school's ethics, rules and regulations, the school can deduct or refuse to validate the Informal Education activities carried out by the student.

  • The person/body of persons responsible for the Organisation offering Informal Education will fill in the Informal Education form which the student will hand back to school in May of each scholastic year.
